The Heart of America Foundation’s focus is to provide children in need everywhere with the tools to read, succeed and make a difference. A national nonprofit headquartered in Washington, DC, its programs uniquely combine volunteerism and literacy. Since 1997, the organization has provided children living in poverty with over 1.8 million books, and has helped volunteers serve more than 1 million hours giving back to the community through these efforts. The Heart of America Foundation® is a national, nonsectarian, non-partisan, nonprofit, humanitarian organization.  Programs include Books From The Heart®, READesign® library makeovers, Heroes of the Heart®, and Sweet Charity.

Through its programs and community partnerships, The Heart of America Foundation offers opportunities for communities and individuals to make a positive difference in the lives of children.

The Gee Whiz Kids Award is a category of the Heroes of the Heart recognition program designed to honor exemplary individuals who represent the heart of America.

Heroes of the Heart™ Gee Whiz Kids™ Award
The Gee Whiz Kids™ Award is designed to honor children who are age 12 and under and who have made a difference in the lives of others through their acts of caring and compassion.

Marilyn Perlyn, author, and Amanda Perlyn, illustrator of the children's book The Biggest and Brightest Light: A True Story of the Heart, donate a portion of the proceeds from their book to the Gee Whiz Kids™ program which provides a scholarship to each award recipient.
